Osteomyelitis is bone infection that can be caused by direct extension from a chronic wound or traumatic injury. It can also can be spread to the bone via the blood stream.
Patients with Diabetes, Vascular Disease, or are immuno-compromised are more susceptible to osteomylitis.
With osteomyelitis, the infection can result in the bone death.
The presence of bone infection can be diagnosed with tests, such as bone scans and MRI.
Osteomyelitis infections are very difficult to cure with oral or intravenous antibiotics. In chronic cases, surgical removal of the dead bone tissue is usually required.
